Breakthrough artist Tones and I is expected to dominate this year’s ARIA’s after being nominated for eight awards, making her the second debut star in three years, to overshadow established acts in the industry.

Coming out of nowhere Tones and I, and two years ago Amy Shark with five nominations, seem to show a growing trend at the ARIA’s in favouring breakthrough musicians.

Stars will walk the red carpet at The Star in Sydney, and Hatch are lucky enough to be covering the red carpet on the day.

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Music Awards were first held at Sydney’s Sheraton Wentworth Hotel in 1987 and – hosted by Elton John.

Past winners have included a cavalcade of Australian rock and pop icons, including INXS, Crowded House and John Farnham, who took home six awards in the event’s first year.

This year, the ceremony will be hosted by The Voice judge Guy Sebastian, who will perform his hit song Choir, alongside other Aussie stars including Hilltop Hoods, The Teskey Brothers, Tones and I, Thelma Plum, Morgan Evans and this year’s Hall of Fame inductees Human Nature.

In addition to Tones and I’s eight nominations for her track Dance Monkey, Hilltop Hoods and The Teskey Brothers are up for seven nominations, and Sebastian is up for four.

Busker-turned-breakout-star Tones and I has also spent 16 consecutive weeks at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart, snatching the record from Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You which spent 15 weeks at the top in 2017.

The public have been able to vote for Song of the Year, Best Video, Best Australian Live Act and Best International Artist, as well as the relatively new Music Teacher of the Year award.

The rest are judged by the voting academy as well as specialist judging schools.

With international stars Khalid, Dua Lipa and Halsey set to take the stage, the 2019 ARIA Awards is going to be one to remember.

The 33rd Annual ARIA Awards will be streamed live on YouTube as well as broadcasted on Channel Nine.
